Location: Lajes harbor, Flores, Azores
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 65 deg F.
Yesterday afternoon, Kelly and I took a different route back to the dinghy after provisioning at the grocery store, and my father never made it back to the harbor. We waited a short while, met a couple who had emigrated to the US and returned to Flores to retire, and joined the man for drinks at his favorite watering hole. Meanwhile, my father (at a different watering hole) was making arrangements with two other boats to hire a driver and explore the island.
The next morning, I met Rod , Les, Michael and Cynthia, and our driver Jose. We hopped in the back of Jose's truck, and were taken on a whirlwind tour of one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I would love to return some day and explore the island by foot. Every view is stunning. You can't take a boring picture.
That night, we met Cynthia and Michael at Paula's café, and listened to a musician on his 12-string Portuguese guitar, drank regional wine and chatted with locals.
Many of us are heading to Horta Tomorrow. Let's hope for favorable winds. It's 130 nautical miles, should take us around 24 hours.
