Weather: Windy & Rainy
Eric & Robyn had booked an outing for all of us with an outfit that takes you up to the top of the volcano in a truck with bicycles and you ride down. The ride was canceled due to lack of visibility. The top of the volcano was buried in a deep cloud. We rescheduled for the next day, but it was not to be.
I hung out on the boat and read while Scott was completing the sealing of the second chain plate, trying to beat the coming rains. It was an Azorean national holiday so all of the stores were closed. I regretted not buying the paint for our mural on Monday, as it turned out to be the last day we had in Faial without rain.
Eric, Robyn, & Kelly were hanging out at the hotel getting caught up on email.
About noon I headed over to meet the rest of the gang at Eric & Robyn’s hotel. Scott was almost done with the chain plate and was going to meet us shortly.
The hotel they stayed in, the Pousada de Santa Cruz, is a 16th-century fort that was converted to a hotel with 26 rooms. It was declared a national monument in 1947. It overlooks the Horta marina. It is an elegant four star hotel with a lot of history. While according to Robyn the breakfast buffet did not meet the Hotel Marina Atlantico standards, still it beat the granola bar that served as breakfast for those of us who stayed on Severance.
Scott’s project ran a little long and the younger crowd was getting hungry, so they headed out in search of lunch. I stayed behind in the hotel room waiting for Scott and finalizing my sketch for the painting.
The “kids” returned very excited about a restaurant they had found.
Contro da Doca is a place where you cook your own meal over a steaming hot piece of basalt (volcanic rock). They bring you a platter of raw fish and meat – limpets (like small oysters or clams), fish, chicken, beef, pork, your choice. Then they bring out a steaming hot square of basalt and place it in the center of the table. You cook your own meat at the table. The meal was incredible and the view, terrific.
They were so charmed by it that they arranged for Scott and me to go that night as an anniversary gift. Our 32nd anniversary was June 5th, the day before we left on this trip. It was one of the most romantic dinners I’ve ever had.
Thank you Robyn & Eric.
