I can’t tell you much about Severance except they seem to have their highs and lows (or should I say ‘fast and slows’). After sailing in circles early last week they finally got some wind and it looks like Robyn and I will not be vacationing alone in the Azores.
Since I can’t tell you Severance's plans (motto: "We've got no plans and we're sticking to them!"), I will tell you about ours. Robyn and I are flying out of Boston this Friday on a direct flight to Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel. We leave Boston at 10pm and arrive in Ponta Delgada at 8am, Saturday. We plan a one night stay there to shower and recover from jet lag. I will be experiencing only about a 3 hour time difference, Robyn will be off by almost a day. (Did I tell you Robyn leaves Portland Thursday night at 10pm? So her trip spans 3 days.)
Severance’s first landfall will be the city of Horta on Faial Island. Sunday we will take an island hopper to Faial and meet up with them. We will explore the islands over the next two weeks, ending up back in Ponta Delgada in time for our return flight on the 20th.
Robyn and I have been doing some research. Much to our surprise, not all islands are tropical!! The temperature is in the 60’s this time of year. So much for the new bathing suit and summer clothes I just bought. And try to buy anything warm in Florida in June!
The islands are very rugged and lush. Pico, the little island just off from Faial, has a volcano that is quite dramatic. I am attaching some pictures of Faial. Also for those of you who are interested, this is a nice site with lots of pictures and information about the Azores.
