Azores Shore Leave – Day 3

Horta, Faial
Date: Monday 06/09/2008
Weather: Mostly Sunny

Monday we presented the guys with our gifts – all of the spare parts and equipment that they asked us to bring over including but not limited to – a 3 gallon water tank and bronze pump for the watermaker, parts to (hopefully) reestablish the internet connection, an AIS (your guess is as good as mine :), parts and antenna to install it, and other plumbing and electrical fittings, tape and wires.

Scott was anxious to start in on the projects, Eric was anxious to spend time with Robyn!

Robyn, Eric & Kelly went to the farmers market and picked out some beautiful fruits and vegetables, including a pineapple grown on Sao Miguel. They explored the town and discovered a café that served these wonderful pastries. They were crispy little potato pockets shaped in a triangle and wrapped around savory fillings. Robyn didn’t stop talking about those pastries the rest of the trip.

Scott and I went to MAYS (Mid Atlantic Yacht Service), a well known boating store. Small, but they had everything you would need to fix anything that went wrong on the passage. They also had very knowledgeable staff to help with any of your questions.

It was here that we learned that there was a storm coming with 40 to 50 kt winds and some serious rain. The storm was supposed to hit sometime Tues afternoon and last at least until Thursday. They were recommending if you need to leave, leave now, otherwise plan on staying awhile.

So, back to the boat for Scott. Project #1 - reseal the chain plates which had leaked badly on the way over.

I joined Kelly, Robyn, and Eric at the hotel pool where we drank beer and wine and relaxed.

From the pool we had an excellent view of Scott working on the chain plates.

Eric & Robyn extended their hotel reservation for 2 days because of the weather.
