Last night there was a meteor so brilliant I thought it was lightning. When I looked to the sky, the contrail was still burning brightly, and it took several minutes to dissipate. I wish I'd seen it happen.
We're getting close, should arrive Tomorrow by noon. We're doing everything we can to eek out a little bit of speed from this light air. Today, we rigged the cruising chute as if it were a poled spinnaker, with a poled guy to windward. We probably picked up half a knot rigging it this way.
One benefit to the light air is the boat is flat and the seas are calm, so it's much easier to complete tasks. Cooking, laundry, reading, cleaning, writing, are no longer dangerous activities. But I miss screaming at 8 knots.
I found a scrap of fresh ginger in the onion bag – inspired me to make Thai red curry. We didn't have much left for produce, but a couple of jalapenos, onions, garlic. We grabbed some coconut milk and curry paste in Bermuda. We have shelf-stable chicken-in-a-pouch. With enough curry paste, it turns out that funky chicken is edible. And that was the end of our produce. Definitely ready to make landfall.
Late tonight, Kelly caught a sea bird. Turned out to be a vicious, man-eating sea bird, who wasn't too happy about getting caught. It had managed to get its wing wrapped around the fishing line where it trails from the transom, before it enters the water. Kelly and my father subdued the bird and untangled the line, but not before learning to grab the neck first. Kelly suffered a thank-you bite as he liberated the terrified bird.
